Wait, is ‘body’ really an abstract concept?! Well…that depends. We all have one, right? Here’s mine, typing this out, advanced digits capable of precise movements, a little hungry, but full of energy. Our body is obvious, it can be seen, felt, touched, smelt. It’s our material vessel, the boat we sail in, the environment where we sense our mind and mind our senses, the beginning and end of our typical ‘experience of ourselves’, including all the physical and mental manifestations of our emotional and physical comfort and wellbeing. But what do we mean by the broader term and it’s deployment in language? ‘Body’? One definition is ‘the whole physical structure of a person’, but equally as often can mean ‘the majority of a physical person, excluding the head, and possibly limbs’. Interesting. It can also refer to ‘a collection of disparate parts or individuals collected together for a specific purpose or through particular circumstances or for a particular purpose’ – the student body, the body of water in the lake, the main body of the article. Finally, it can be ‘an amount of something’ – the growing body of evidence. Alcehmists would have little dispute with these definitions, in as much as they assert that all bodies are, in fact, concretizations, crystallizations of thought emerging from soul, of Mercury coagulating Sulfur. They might say that the traditional view of the body is the first, but their view is the ‘incorporation’ of the body – the coagulation of a Salt from the union of Sulfur and Mercury - which would be the 'abstract' sort of body, where a glomming together of parts for a purpose or by circumstance takes place, following a design or principle. These days, there are fewer reasons for secrecy in most parts of the World. The mission of the Adepts has, in many ways, succeeded, and religious doctrine has been superseded by empirical transparent processes of knowledge, albeit 'the baby may have been thrown out with bathwater', somewhat. Of all the nomenclature and jargon used in alchemical writing, none is perhaps as confusing as 𝑴𝒆𝒓𝒄𝒖𝒓𝒚. From the alchemical perspective, 𝑴𝒆𝒓𝒄𝒖𝒓𝒚 is the 𝑺𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒊𝒕 of any given material. Paracelsus explains: “𝑭𝒐𝒓 𝑴𝒆𝒓𝒄𝒖𝒓𝒚 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒊𝒕, 𝑺𝒖𝒍𝒇𝒖𝒓 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒐𝒖𝒍, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑺𝒂𝒍𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒐𝒅𝒚.” This just gives us an even more weaselly word to try to get to grips with – ‘Spirit’. Oh dear! Spirit can be defined as the 𝒏𝒐𝒏-𝒑𝒉𝒚𝒔𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒃𝒖𝒕𝒆𝒔of a person, place or thing. In people, this would be the seat of emotions, character, and the source of mind and ego. Also 'spirit' can mean 'will' - keep your spirit up, she lost the spirit for the thing, etc. It’s a slippery slope, language, isn’t it? . // 𝐒𝐔𝐋𝐅𝐔𝐑 // 𝑨 𝑻𝑹𝑬𝑨𝑻𝑰𝑺𝑬 𝒐𝒏 𝑨𝑳𝑪𝑯𝑬𝑴𝒀 𝒊𝒏 𝑭𝑶𝑼𝑹 𝑷𝑨𝑹𝑻𝑺 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒕 #2 In the 8th Century, a Persian alchemist by the name of Jabir ibn Hayyan (a.k.a Geber) wrote a mysterious treatise on 2 alchemical principles: Sulfur and Mercury. This would revolutionize alchemical studies and become synonymous with the language of alchemy thereafter. He – and most alchemists – wrote in extremely cryptic prose, secreting their teaching in a coded cypher that veiled the sacred secrets from those unfamiliar with the terminology. Our word “Jibberish” has its origins here, referring directly to this style of writing, which was impenetrable to the casual, uninitiated observer. Once we understand that ‘Sulfur’ does not refer to brimstone, the smelly volcanic yellow element, nor ‘Mercury’ to quicksilver, we can begin to decipher the real intention behind the cryptic codes. Paracelsus, in his work “Concerning the Nature of Things”, writes simply and directly that: “𝑺𝒖𝒍𝒇𝒖𝒓 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒐𝒖𝒍”. Alchemists who had studied the works of Jabir knew Sulfur to be ‘an oily substance’, one which could be extracted and concentrated out of any selected material (animal, vegetable, mineral or metal – the ‘four elements’ of the alchemists). Although we know that alchemists view Sulfur as ‘an oil’, which contains the ‘essence’ of that which it has been procured from, it resonated much more profoundly as a deeper symbol to the alchemical mind. “Soul” can be defined as: ‘The immaterial essence, animating principle, or actuating cause of an individual life’. You can look in the dictionary if you don’t believe me. In the simplest possible terms, Alchemy is a praxis which seeks to understand the relationship between Consciousness (“I AM”) and Matter. Easy to dismiss as either pre-scientific chemistry, concerned only with bubbling potions in vain attempts to ‘transmute metals’ from lead to gold via the famed ‘Philosopher’s Stone’, or as poetic New-Age nonsense referring only to allegories and metaphors about ‘personal growth’, that are best discarded for more modern technologies of the psyche, it is in fact something more profound and coherent than either. Alchemy throughout human history has been concerned with the essential relationship between the 𝒊𝒎𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒍 and the 𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒍– the 𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒖𝒂𝒍 and the 𝒑𝒉𝒚𝒔𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍.
